Tivo Hacking Log

DD'ed original to 100GB WD disk

  • Opened up, removed drive, DD'ed with PC, nothing special.
  • dd stopped when end of smaller original disk was reached.
  • Used cmp to check; copy was good.

Changed firmware PASSWORD

  • Hooked up to Win 3.1 laptop using terminal program to serial port, pressed [enter] right on bootup.
  • Used minicom from Linux Aptiva PC, worked better.
  • Tried many speeds, only 9600 seemed to work. (too bad!)
  • Fiddled with boot parameters, made it boot off of alternate root partition.
  • Changed password
  • Tried booting with 'shondds=true' parameter; did not work; my tivo version is too new.

Added BASH to startup script on WD tivo disk partition 4

This was difficult, I ran into many problems.

  • Created Dylan's boot disk (DBD), would not boot on Aptiva. I think because of K6 instead of pentium.
  • Downloaded 2.4 kernel with tivo support compiled in, did not work. Probably since it was not patched to work with debian, i.e. initrd not setup...
  • Tried pdisk on aptiva, could see partitions, but still couldn't mount them.
  • Setup Gateway, booted with DBD, could not see harddrive right.
  • Finally setup Abit, booted with DBD, could STILL not see harddrive right.
  • Read docs better and found out about not mounting as Master!!!
Duh, got it to be recognized this time.
  • Was able to mount partition 4, added bash line to the end of rc.sysinit, backed up to rc.sysinit
  • Posted Question about sound distortion
